World Premiere For The BMW i8 Plug In Hybrid
Here it is, world premiere for BMW i8 plug in hybrid sports car. Second model from the brand new BMW i department, this marks the first plug in hybrid from the BMW Group and the world’s most
innovative looking sports car right now. Without a doubt the lines, styling and design cues are all there, making this a glimpse into the high performance eco friendly future. Today.
I said high performance because the numbers BMW showcased to journalists go in that direction. This may be a hybrid car, a car powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, displacement: 1.5 litres, but its output stands at 170 kW/231 hp with a maximum torque: 320 Nm (236 lb-ft). Combine that with model-specific hybrid synchronous electric motor with an output in the line with 96 kW/131 hp, maximum torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) with power channelled through the front wheels via a two-stage automatic transmission and you’ve got yourself something special.
Combination of BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technology plus intelligent energy management produce system output of 266 kW/362 hp (max. torque: 570 Nm / 420 lb-ft) and give the BMW i8 the performance characteristics of a pure-bred sports car (0 – 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.4 seconds) combined with fuel economy and emissions figures more familiar from a small car (EU fuel consumption: 2.5 litres per 100 km / 113 mpg imp). All that with a “glued-to-the-road” AWD driving experience with torque distribution geared towards optimised dynamics and this is one car we’d love to own and drive.
Range, you ask? Driving Experience Control switch and eDrive button allow driver to choose from five driving modes. You can have a range of up to 35 kilometres (22 miles) on electric power alone and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). With COMFORT mode you receive an optimum balance between dynamics and efficiency, resulting in a combined range in everyday conditions of over 500 kilometres (310 miles). Finally, a SPORT mode with ultra-intense boost function provided by the electric motor which BMW hasn’t revealed range specs yet. ECO PRO mode can be used in both all-electric mode and hybrid mode.
With additional technology advancements in materials used (carbon reinforced plastic, magnesium, aluminum etc.), BMW has achieved exceptional and comprehensive safety concept that allows for high performance advancements as well through an ultra-torsionally stiff passenger cell.
Complete that with a wide range of BMW ConnectedDrive features and this car looks, performs and is built like a thing from the future. But the future is now and it’s awesome. BMW also produces several parts of this vehicle through an all-embracing sustainability concept running like a thread through the value chain where carbon fibre production and vehicle assembly is done using 100-per cent renewable electricity. A high proportion of recycled materials is used in the process and a lot of use of materials manufactured and treated in an environmentally friendly manner.
I really don’t like going into too much technical stuff. Our website is mostly keen on showcasing the performance numbers, talking about looks, but in true honesty … we are seriously impressed with the BMW i8 and can’t wait to drive it when it hits the streets next year. Check the official media gallery, learn for yourself how stunning this thing really is. Have fun!
