Two Extremes, One Platform: AMG Is Building the Most Radical Black Series Ever, Plus a New GT3

Mercedes-AMG just confirmed what a lot of us suspected when that wild CONCEPT AMG GT TRACK SPORT showed up last year. It was not just a show car. It was a promise. And now that promise has a name: the future Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and a next-generation GT3, both riding out of the same platform and both aimed squarely at people who think modern performance cars have gone soft.

One Concept, Two Purposes

The MERCEDES-AMG CONCEPT AMG GT TRACK SPORT has been doing the rounds since last year, and AMG fans spent most of that time speculating about what exactly it meant for the GT family. The answer turns out to be the most interesting one possible: a technology demonstrator serving as the shared foundation for two completely separate, uncompromising vehicles. One goes racing. One goes on the road. Both carry the same DNA.

The road-legal variant of the concept serves as a homologation model for the new GT3, the cleanest possible reason to build a road car. You are not building it because marketing asked for a halo vehicle. You are building it because the rulebook says the road car has to exist, and AMG is taking that mandate and running straight off a cliff with it.

The Black Series Promise, and Why It Matters

AMG chairman Michael Schiebe used the words “most extreme Black Series ever,” and at this point, that phrase needs to be taken seriously. The Black Series lineage goes back to 2006, starting with the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, a car that grew out of an internal project called TRACK SPORT, built to take motorsport focus and make it street-legal. Every Black Series since has escalated. The GT Black Series that came before this one already lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife faster than a McLaren Senna. So when AMG says this next one will be the most extreme yet, they are not padding a press release.

That original SLK 55 ran a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 making 355 hp, and it served as the official FIA Formula 1 Safety Car. There is something deeply correct about that origin story. A real V8, a real motorsport connection, a car built for people who wanted to feel what the engineers actually cared about rather than what a focus group approved. Car culture was different then. The 90s and early 2000s had a specific honesty to them: V8s were the default answer, weight was the enemy, and nobody was trying to make a sports car approachable. That ethos needs to come back, and AMG is one of the few brands still capable of delivering it.

If the new GT Black Series needs a soundtrack, it is DJ Tommek’s Ich Lebe Fur Hip Hop. That specific combination of aggression and precision, mechanical and cultural at the same time, is exactly the energy a car like this carries. The 90s knew how to match machines with attitude, and a Black Series built on a race car platform is the automotive equivalent of that era’s confidence.

The New GT3: Customer Racing Gets a Proper Successor

On the motorsport side, the new Mercedes-AMG GT3 continues a Customer Racing program that began in 2010 with the SLS AMG GT3 and has won races ever since. AMG has now established Affalterbach Racing GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary, specifically to develop and build the new car alongside Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. That is a serious structural commitment, not just an update cycle.

Testing has been running since October 2025, with prototype work at Bilster Berg, Portimão, Monteblanco, and now the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The camouflage wrap uses yellow accents for the Black Series car and red for the GT3, which gives AMG a clean visual language to separate the two programs going forward.

No Details Yet, and That Is Fine

AMG is not releasing power figures, weight targets, or lap times yet. Further specifications for both vehicles will be provided later. Normally, that would be frustrating, but in this case, the confirmation itself is the news. A new GT3 built on a dedicated platform with a subsidiary company behind it, and a Black Series AMG has been confirmed to be the most extreme they have ever made. Those are not small statements.

The Black Series has always existed for one type of driver: someone who wants the full racing experience without a roll cage and a fire suit. If AMG keeps that promise and backs it with a proper naturally aspirated or high-revving powertrain worthy of the lineage, this could be the most important AMG in years. The bar is set. Now they have to clear it. For a more detailed look at the concept cars, please grab a look at the media gallery right below.
